Find My Friends helps you locate your friends and family in iOS
This is admittedly a niche use for Find My Friends. Though it may seem creepy or unnecessary to some, for others, the ability to constantly track one another is a normalized, even welcome addition to their close relationships.
This can change the dynamic of friendships in ways both good and bad, both subtle and profound. Read: How friendships change in adulthood. Many services now allow people to share their location temporarily—you can share for an hour on Facebook Messenger, and Google Maps lets you customize the duration. For instance, Kelsey Ko, a year-old teacher with Teach for America in Baltimore, turned on Find My Friends with the group of women she went to Puerto Rico with for spring break in her sophomore year of college, so that they could find one another if they got separated.
Which brings us to the more curious kind of location sharing: the ambient, always-on kind. You can see whether they happen to be nearby, and have a happy chance meeting. This is a particularly common scenario in college, where people are likely to be within a small, bounded area. Bryan Radcliff, a year-old wealth manager who lives in Wilmington, Delaware, gives the example of a cross-country road trip he took with a friend last year.
Back home, location tracking can also reveal exciting news. The most commonly cited benefit that I heard was the sense of safety that comes from having someone always know where you are notable especially given the fact that the number of single-person households in the United States has been steadily rising since , according to the Census Bureau.
Several people told me they regularly checked Find My Friends or a similar app after leaving a party or a bar, to make sure their friends got home safely. I shared my location with my friends, and they came and got me. Radcliff was also recently able to help a friend in danger thanks to Find My Friends. According to Radcliff, his friend was sleep-driving—he had taken a sleep aid and gotten behind the wheel of a car without waking up—and got into an accident. No one was hurt, and the friend got home safely.
Anecdotally, this certainly seems to be the case. Back then, he found that people were more willing to share their location in limited ways—say, when they were within a mile of a friend—and, perhaps obviously, that they were more willing to share with people they felt closer to. When location sharing is a group norm, opting out without consequence becomes tricky. And how will friends interpret that? I pick people I trust. Regardless of the myriad ways it can be used, location sharing is, at its core, a gesture of trust and intimacy.
I feel safer knowing that they know where I am. We want to hear what you think about this article. Submit a letter to the editor or write to letters theatlantic.

Find My Friends: A Cool, Creepy and Life-Saving App
Apple designed Find My Friends in as a means for better-connecting with friends and family. It's pretty useful for scenarios when you need to keep tabs at an amusement park or to get a live ETA when your buddy is coming to pick you up from the airport. You can even share your location with others so they can track your whereabouts as you go about your day. Sure, you need consent from both parties before sharing a location, but what if I were to enable Find My Friends on someone else's iPhone, then share their location to my iPhone without them knowing?
Sandy Writtenhouse on October 28, The Find My app , available on iOS and Mac, is a terrific tool for staying up to date on where your favorite people go and tracking down missing devices, all in one spot. With the host of features in the Find My app, one that stands out is the Notification function. You can receive an alert when someone else leaves or arrives at a location as well as notify them when you leave or arrive at yours. Not only are these notifications convenient for staying in-the-know but they can help you and your loved ones have peace of mind.

Steffen Reich on October 17, With the arrival of iOS 10 and the ability to delete the stock apps some users might find pesky, Find My Friends certainly must be a contender for the title of most frequently trashed app on the Home screen. As teased in the headline, imagine you could use your Find My Friends app to receive a notification when your dinner date is a few blocks away from the restaurant in the city, letting you know it is about time to hit the road yourself. Fear not, because if you know how to, Find my Friends allows you to do just that.
iOS 13 Find My App: How to Track Your iPhone or Friends
The combined app, now called Apple Find My, has a new look but it works the same way it always has. So if you were to, Heaven forbid, lose your new iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro , you could still track it down using your iCloud account. The new Find My app joins a healthy list of new features Apple added to iOS 13 and iPadOS , including dark mode , a swear-resistant gesture keyboard or is it? The People tab is where you'll find any of your contacts that were previously in the Find My Friends app, including anyone in your Apple Family Sharing group.
Although there are legitimate concerns about sharing your location willy-nilly, Find My Friends gives everyone full control over what they share, making it truly helpful for families and close friends. In their conversation, tap the i button, tap Share My Location, and in the popover that appears, tap Share Indefinitely. Share for One Hour and Share Until End of Day are useful for temporarily sharing your location while traveling, say, to visit colleagues with whom permanent sharing would be inappropriate. However you initiate the sharing, the other person receives a notification and can accept and choose to share their location as well. That said, unidirectional sharing is all right, though in families and particularly for children, bidirectional sharing can be more helpful.
Bump your stalking skills with custom geofences in Apple’s Find My Friends
Wednesday, October 16 , [ Tweets ] [ Favorites ]. Interesting: in Find My in iOS 13, the subject of a notification is told you set up a notification. In Find My Friends in the iOS 12 era, you could quietly notify yourself about a friend without them knowing. I could notify myself when she leaves her current location. The person being tracked has already consented and can revoke the permission whenever they want. They can also already see in the app when they are being tracked. Some sort of notification may make sense to remind people who have forgotten that they enabled this feature years ago. But a notification for every single use is really annoying.
When iOS 13 comes out — possibly as soon as this coming week — you might notice a couple of blank spaces on your iPhone or iPad's home screen. That's because Apple has taken two of its apps, Find My iPhone and Find My Friends, and collapsed them into a single app, with the somewhat sensible but also slightly unwieldy name Find My. Fear not, though: pretty much all of the functionality from those apps has made it into their replacement. Find My mainly serves as a chance for Apple to redesign those apps, bringing all their location-related finding services under one roof, whether you use Find My to track an iPhone or locate your friends.

Set location notifications for friends in Find My on Mac
This presents two problems in my mind. When a user first opens the app, it will show a list of friends who are sharing their location. Rather than showing a map view, it will just be a list. Selecting a friend from the list would give you their map location, their contact info, and options to stop sharing location, request their location, and set up or edit notifications.
Find My Friends may be one of the most helpful apps you ever use. This app can help you locate those who are near and dear to you and help them locate you. In fact, Find My Friends is an app that can even save lives. But Find My Friends is also one of the most controversial apps from Apple. Not everyone likes the idea of an app tracking their location.
